This is a Coconut Palm Tree. Stand under it and you may get a king sized headache. a coconut can weigh up to 4 pounds! Ouch! In some parts of the world, I have seen the area under a coconut palm fenced off to prevent people from getting hit.
This strange and exotic tree is actually a bananna plant.
The "thing" hanging down is a inflorescence, what ever that is!
